CRYSTAL AM NELSON - -
photographer, writer, and interdisciplinary artist, is a second-year
MFA student in the photography department at SFAI. She graduated summa cum laude from
University of Rhode Island (URI) with a BA in English and Identity Studies. While
completing her undergraduate studies, she spent a year exploring African Art and
Literature at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. It was during that
year that Nelson discovered her calling to photography.
Her travels and exposure to different cultures and lifestyles operate as the
foundation for her visual and textual exploration of identity. She is particularly
interested in how identities are socio-politically constructed, manifested,
and regulated. Nelson has been actively involved in art since she was a child,
and began her formal studies in middle school when she participated in a teen art
program at the Rhode Island School of Design. Since then she has studied art at
the Rhode Island School of Design, University of Rhode Island, University of
Stellenbosch, AS220, and the International Center of Photography. She has
exhibited in Providence, South Africa, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco.
